Customer Reviews

I bought this case because I really enjoy the function of my Kindle case and this looked to be a similar solution for my Playbook. I've been using the case four days and for the most part I am satisfied with it.
Some Dislikes:
The Playbook is a bit awkward to hold with the cover flipped back in its normal landscape orientation. The excess material from the spine just seems to get in the way. I find myself preferring to rotate it 180 degrees with the camera on the bottom. This is not an issue for most of the applications since they can usually run in any orientation. The same thing holds true if you want to lay the device flat on a table or desk since in the normal orientation the device tilts away from you.
If you are unhappy with the power button, this case unfortunately makes this situation worse. I even find the volume rocker a little harder to use. Each of them does have a sweet spot and once you find it they are usable. I'm just disappointed that RIM couldn't have improved the whole button issue with this case.
The elastic strap seems a little weak and could have been more robust (more like the Kindle cover). It also doesn't match the pictures I saw on RIM's website which show metal grommets and a round elastic strap. It may hold up just fine but definitely an area of concern.
What I Like:
The journal case fits the Playbook like a glove. The rubberized shell holds the device very secure and offers very good protection. My primary reason for wanting this particular case was my 10 year old bounces around the house while using my Playbook. With this case the likelihood that a drop will damage it is significantly reduced.
Although RIM also makes a cover that doubles as a stand, I found that I can stand up my Playbook using this case on stable flat surfaces. Again the app must be able to run in the upside down orientation.
The case is also very light weight and doesn't add significant thickness. The leather is high quality and the Blackberry logo and brand name on the spine are very stylish. Overall the Journal Case works for me and a very good accessory to the Blackberry Playbook.

As much as I love the PlayBook "as-is", I have a 10 year old and a 3 year old who love to play with it. I knew that I had to have some sort of protection. My original purchase was a CaseMate Pop Case, which worked really well. However, when I'm carrying it in my bag, there's no real protection for the screen...and honestly, the plastic just made it look cheap.
This case solves those issues. It protects the PlayBook from little boys who like to play games on it. It closes up so the screen has protection in my bag. The leather cover makes this look so professional - and much less obvious when I'm carrying it. It adds very little to the size/weight of the PlayBook, which is a plus as well.
There are a couple of downsides. I do wish it could hold my stylus somewhere. You also have to get used to the way you will hold it with the cover folded back...it seems "backwards". The volume buttons take a little extra push to work. You can't keep it closed and plug in the charge cable (again, feels backwards...if they'd only set it so you put the PB in the other way...). To me though, the benefits outweigh these - and if I were in a situation where these things were higher priority, I'd just pull out my Pop Case, or take it out of a case entirely.
All in all, worth the money I spent!
